World chess has entered a dramatic new political chapter, with Kazakh businessman and chess patron Timur Turlov announcing his candidacy for President of the International Chess Federation. In his statement, Turlov described chess as a game experiencing rapid global growth, powered by millions of new players, rising youth participation, stronger digital access, and growing commercial appeal.
He argued, however, that FIDE now stands at a crossroads and needs fresh energy to continue its progress. His announcement comes after Arkady Dvorkovich suspended his presidential powers following EU sanctions, with Viswanathan Anand stepping in as interim president. Turlov presents himself as a candidate with both business experience and a proven record of investment in chess. As founder of Freedom Holding Corp., he points to a company valued at about $10 billion, operating in 22 countries and serving more than 14 million clients. Since becoming President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation in 2023, he says Kazakhstan has hosted major international events, including the Men’s World Chess Championship match and the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship.
He also highlights more than $75 million invested in chess, from infrastructure in Kazakhstan to elite events in New York and Washington. With Anand alongside him, Turlov is framing his campaign around an “open and unifying” FIDE, one capable of balancing global interests and pushing chess into its next era.
Turlov said he is running for FIDE President and outlined his chess investments, Kazakhstan record, and plan to contest the election with Viswanathan Anand.
