International Master Aikhoje Odion has been named as the replacement for reigning Nigerian Chess Champion CM Tennyson Ewomazino Olisa on Nigeria’s team for the upcoming Chess Olympiad in Samarkand. The change brings one of Nigeria’s most experienced players into the squad as the country prepares to compete on one of the biggest stages in international chess. Aikhoje’s addition provides the team with considerable experience and strengthens the lineup following Olisa’s withdrawal.

Olisa, who earned his place on the team, withdrew to focus on his final-year university examinations and graduation. His decision comes at a significant point in his academic journey, requiring him to prioritize completing his studies over representing Nigeria at the Olympiad. While his absence means Nigeria will be without its reigning champion, Aikhoje’s experience at the highest levels of Nigerian chess provides the team with an established replacement as preparations for the Olympiad continue.
