RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE RAPIDS CHESS TOURNAMENT HOSTED BY BAMBOO TOWERS AND THE CHESS LEAGUE IBADAN
The much-anticipated tourney kicked off at about 10 am on Saturday, 24th of July, commemorating the Int’l Chess Day annually celebrated on the 20th of July.
The tournament mode included six(6) rounds of swiss pairing format while a rapid time control of 10min plus 5 seconds increment per move was adopted.
The organizing committee consisted of a tournament Director—Mr. Iredele Ogunbayo, The Chief Arbiter—DI Olabode Sofoluwe and Chief Arbiter—Mr. Emeka Madueke assisted by Mr. Olajide Kehinde and Mrs. Adeyemi Debola.
A total of 66 interested participants registered before the commencement of the D-Day while a very encouraging turn out of 51 players including one of Nigeria’s most celebrated chess players, International Master Aikhoje Odion marked their presence in the course of the tournament.
The games lasted about 5 hours of six rounds and a very interesting series of events turned out during the course of each round. Alas, the final round saw the ever gallant International Master (IM) Aikhoje Odion triumph undefeated all through the six (6) rounds. Another promising young player Omolayo Ayomide came second in the open category with 5.5 points while three (3) other players Animashaun Arowolo, Kinsley Chukwu and Akinyemi David all tied for 3rd place with 5 points each.
The female category had winners in which both Mrs. Debola Adeyemi and Mrs. Dikeocha Alexis shared first place with 4 points each while Chukura Ada and Adegbola Tomisin tied for the third position, recording 3points each.
The Under-16 category also recorded a winner in person of I5 years old Soliu Hassan who finished with an impressive four (4) points while four other young proteges (Soliu Wasiu, Sambo Joseph, Sambo Pius and Adeyemi Ayomiposi) tied for the second place as they recorded three (3) points each.
The prize-giving ceremony followed after the conclusion of the games and the event recorded a successful closing.
