Victor Onyemuwa triumphs at Port Harcourt Monthly Rapid Chess Tournament

Victor Onyemuwa, Efe Omosohwofa, WFM Perpetual Ogbiyoyo, Emmanuella Trust, Amarachi Agiri and Kere Alagoa all shine at the Port Harcourt Monthly Rapid Chess Championship November 2020 Edition

Yesterday, the 21st of November had the collection of some of the best chess players in South-South Nigeria. 38 Chess players participated in the tournament with Four (4) FIDE title holders. Three FIDE Masters and a Woman FIDE Master in the Person of Perpetual Ogbiyoyo graced the event.

FIDE Master Bomo Kigigha rated 2320 was top seed of the tournament. He is a three time Nigeria National Chess Champion, two time Gold medalist at the National Sports Festival, Chess Olympian and current Coach of Bayelsa State Chess Association. Kigigha was the favorite to win the event as he had a good run and won the last Bayelsa state Monthly Rapid.

Ranked Number 2 was FIDE Master Abimbola Osunfuyi 2292 popularly known as Young GM. He is a member of the Oyo state Chess Team that won the Team Gold at the 2018 National sports festival, Abuja. Young GM has won several National tournaments and recently had an outstanding performance at the African Games in Rabat, Morocco. Full Report by Dr. Daaim Shabazz.

The Underdog, an Engineer, Victor Onyemuwa, rated 2043 defeated FM Abimbola Osunfuyi in the final round to clinch 1st Place with 6.5/7 points and won the Star prize in the Masters category.

On the other hand, Efe Omosohwofa, a home based player swiftly drove home the Opens category 1st prize with 5/7 points.

Three female players had to slug it out but tied on same point (4/7 points) at the end of the event. WFM Perpetual Ogbiyoyo, Emmanuella Trust and Amarachi Agiri shared 1st to 3rd place.

Junior Player and top U-15 Bayelsan Player, Kere Alagoa continued to show dominance as he clinched 1st prize at Port Harcourt’s Monthly Rapid Chess U-15 category after holding a top player Emmanuel Nwala, President of Creekside Chess Club (CSCC) to a draw.
