Upcoming Chess Tournament 2024: The Namibia Chess Federation (NCF)

The Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) warmly invites all chess players, whether local or international, with or without titles, rated or unrated, Chess enthusiasts from all over the world and the diaspora are invited to join the esteemed 2024 Bank Windhoek Namibian Chess Open. Namibia, known for its delicious dishes, cleanliness, great roads, and warm ambience, invites everyone to experience this major tournament, holding at Windhoek Golf and Country Club, B1 Road, Western Bypass, Windhoek, Namibia from the 7th of May, 2024 to the 13th of May, 2024, in its welcoming atmosphere.

The FIDE rated event has a time control of 75 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move from move 1 and a Swiss System tournament over seven rounds. The pairings system includes a Swiss Manager and the Tie-Breaks is to applied based on the tournament format and FIDE regulations. The point system to be adopted include; 1 point for a win, 0.5 for a draw, and 0 for a loss.

The event features 4 sections;
Open Section: This Section is open all chess players (locals & non-locals).
Women’s Section: This section is open only to female players (locals & non-locals).
Veteran Section: This Section is open only to players aged 50 and above (locals & non-locals).
Junior Section: This section is open only to players under the age of 20 (locals & non-locals if rated must
be below 2000 FIDE).

Registration Fees & Procedure: N$ 200.00 (11 USD) – NCF Members and Internationals (Adults, Juniors, and Cadets),
N$ 300.00 (16 USD) – Non-NCF Members and Internationals (Adults, Juniors, and Cadets)
The GM, WGM, IM, and WIM TITLED PLAYERS ARE EXEMPT FROM PAYING REGISTRATION FEES.
Once-off pro-rata compensation for travel and/or accommodation from FIDE on a first-come, first-serve basis, subject to resource availability. The LOC reserves the rights to pay appearance fees to select titled players.

The Code of Conduct for the tournament includes:

  • Players must be on time; being 15 minutes late forfeits their game.
  • No cell phones or electronic devices are allowed in the playing area; having one can lead to forfeiting a game.
  • Any permitted phones must be switched off, and ringing alarms lead to immediate forfeit.
  • No talking on cell phones is allowed in the playing area.
  • Keep the venue clean; no food on the game tables.
  • Cameras with flash are allowed for only the first 15 minutes of a round.
  • Silence must be maintained; players become spectators after their games.
  • Pieces moved must stay moved unless it’s an illegal move.
  • Results must be entered correctly after each round.
  • Penalties for illegal moves are given; rude behavior leads to disqualification.
  • Score sheets must be completed after every move; not doing so can result in warnings or game loss.
  • Players will be provided with pens, but they should bring their own if possible.
  • For any disputes not covered, the Chief Arbiter’s decision is final.

Note that the deadline for Registration is on the 1st May, 2024, and late registration attracts a penalty of N$400.00 (22 USD) payable, allowed only from the 2nd of May to 5th of May 2024.
