The John Fawole Chess Awards: See who made the cut

The John Fawole Chess Awards was hosted on Twitter Spaces on the 22nd of October 2022 at 5:00 PM WAT. The program was preceded by a speech from the Director of Events, Mr. Tolulope Fasinu, who introduced the individuals who would be hosting and co-hosting the event.

Mc Prophecee and Perpetua Peter Fasanmi were Hosts and Co-hosts, respectively. 

Perpetua Peter Fasanmi was the Host of the last physical event held at Chevron Club, Gbagada, Lagos, in 2019. Due to COVID, the awards was put to a stall but only resumed again after a year and eight months.

The panel of judges who presided over the year in review awards are:

Sunny Eyenghe as the chairman of the panel;

Abolade Odugbesan; member

Dr. Oluwalasinu Lanre Seye; member

Adegbayi Oluwadara; member

BruvsChess Media‘s Correspondent Adesewa Oyewole gave the audience a brief history of the Awards. After that, Perpetua presented the first set of the Award of Recognition

Comedian, Mc ChinChin cracked some jokes to keep the audience lively.

Mr. Lolomari George, FIDE Master Elect, a financial professional with over twenty (20) years of experience, gave a Pep talk about “playing chess and creating a work-life balance.”

IM Elect Ajibola Olanrewaju won his first MAN CHESS PLAYER OF THE YEAR Award at the #FawoleAwards. Other Outstanding winners included FM Abimbola Osunfuyi, BLITZ PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2020, and WFM Deborah Akintoye, who also won the WOMAN CHESS PLAYER OF THE YEAR Award for the first time to mention a few.

Man Player of the Year—IM Elect Ajibola Olanrewaju

Woman Player of the Year—WFM Deborah Akintoye

Junior Player of the Year (Boys)—Isaac Okeke

Junior Player of the Year (Girls)—Jessica Pelomoh

Online Chess Organizer of the Year—Samson Ofubu

Arbiter of the Year—Boyo Paul Kehinde

Online Blitz Player of the Year—FM Abimbola Osunfuyi

Chess Club of the Year—Creekside Chess Club

The year in review 2020 had eight (8) nominated categories and eighteen (18) Awards of recognition for personalities who have contributed immensely to the development of chess in Nigeria.

The organizers of The John Fawole Chess Awards hinted yesterday via a tweet that the 2021 and 2022 Awards would be combined and done as a physical event in 2023.

Chess fans and players are looking forward to it.
