Peruvian GM Jorge Cori has been crowned the winner of the VII Ibero-American Championship 2019, held in Linares (Spain), during August 10-18.

Jorge Moisés Cori Tello is a Peruvian chess grandmaster who was twice world champion and four-time Pan American champion in his age category. Cori has competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2011, 2013 and 2017 and has played for the Peruvian team in the Chess Olympiad since 2010.

Cori, who was the top-seeded player, reached the last round trailing the leaders -Francisco Vallejo and Carlos Daniel Albornoz- by half a point. But while they made a draw in the last round, the Peruvian young talent achieved the victory in a must-win situation and leapfrogged them to the top of the table thanks to a better tie-break. Sabrina Vega, from Spain, finished in 17th place, a result that gave her the gold medal for the best woman.
