Nigeria’s Deborah Quickpen Shines Again: DQ finishes in the 3rd position at the National Friends of Chess Blitz Tournament (NFCO)

Deborah Ebimobo-Ere, fondly known as DebbyQuick, has once again proven her strength in the world of chess. Fresh from her outstanding performance at the African Individual Chess Championship (AICC) 2024 in Accra, Ghana, where she halted South Africa’s WIM Jesse February Nikki‘s winning streak and also had a draw in her game with the Egyptian WGM Shahenda Wafa. DebbyQuick displayed her abilities and skills at the National Friends of Chess (NFOC) Blitz tournament held on March 27, 2024. The tournament, hosted at the Chevron Recreation Centre in Gbagada, Lagos, brought together some of Nigeria’s top male chess players alongside DebbyQuick, who is renowned for her exceptional skills despite her young age of 12 years.

In an exciting and interesting display of strategy and determination, Deborah Quickpen secured a notable third-place finish out of 103 participants. Her performance was highlighted by victories against formidable opponents such as Koko Obubele, Okemakinde Toluwanimi, and Ogbogho Dennis, all with impressive blitz ratings.

One of the standout moments of the tournament was DebbyQuick‘s clash with Edet Udeme Dominic, the top-ranked player, who had an impressive winning streak until he faced Deborah’s formidable gameplay. Despite facing experienced players like IM Balogun Oluwafemi Daniel and IM Odion Aikhoje, Deborah held her ground and delivered a stunning victory against IM Odion Aikhoje, rated 2292. Her final score of 8.5 points out of 11 solidified her position among Nigeria’s chess elites, with Edet Udeme Dominic and IM Balogun Oluwafemi sharing the top spot with 9 points each.
