The Nigerian chess community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Sandif Samson, a promising young player from Gombe State who lost his life in a road accident while traveling to Filiya to write his Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Sandif, born in 2009, was a registered FIDE player (ID: 8551499) who competed at the ECOBANK National School Team Chess Championship 2025, representing Redeemers Covenant Int’l School, and also featured at the North-East Zonal Chess Championship in Gombe State in the U20 category. Beyond the chessboard, he was a remarkable young man, Head Boy of Kilang High School, Kaltungo, and President of the Fellowship of Christian Students.
The Gombe State Chess Association confirmed his passing in a heartfelt Facebook announcement by Coach Yakkon Damaryam, describing Sandif as a chess prodigy whose potential was only beginning to be realized.
Sandif represented what youth chess development in Nigeria is all about — academic excellence, leadership, and competitive spirit. His loss is felt far beyond Gombe State.
BruvsChess Media extends sincere condolences to his family, teammates, coaches, and the entire Gombe State Chess Association.
Rest in peace, Sandif. The board is quieter without you.
