Background information

The Kraaifontein Chess Club was founded in April 2016 with the objective establishing a broad-based community chess development programme in Kraaifontein. The club currently operates from the Kraaifontein library and provides opportunities for chess training (coaching), friendly chess matches as well as competition play for players for beginner, intermediate and advanced level. The club is managed by a very capable executive committee and is active throughout the year.

The club uses chess as an instrument to facilitate social interaction and creates an environment where people from the different communities and social groups within Kraaifontein can meet and socialise together. Within this environment chess players, enthusiasts and supporters are exposed to persons that can act as life coaches, positive role models and mentors to them and they are also presented with opportunities to informally network with business and other professionals.

Since its establishment the club have shown consistent growth and has been well supported by the community of

Kraaifontein. Some of our activities are listed below:

The club have regular weekly chess practice and coaching sessions on Wednesday evenings and hosted several chess tournaments over the past three years. These club events have been well supported by Kraaifontein residents, learners from local schools and chess players from across the Cape Peninsula.

Our youth chess development programme is one of the biggest chess programmes facilitated by a chess club in the Western Cape. Weekly chess training sessions are being hosted every Wednesday afternoon at the Kraaifontein library, targeting learners from nearby schools. This chess training programme was further extended to provide chess training sessions at Eikendal Library as well as schools in Wallacedene and Northpine. Currently our chess training programme reaches well over 300 learners at schools in Kraaifontein.

Annually, during the second weekend in December, the club hosts the Kraaifontein Open Chess Tournament. This event has been successfully hosted since 2016 and attracts participants from across the Cape Peninsula.
