“Chess to Street” Initiative Empowers Underprivileged Children in Ikorodu

In the lively streets of Ikorodu, an inspiring movement is gaining a driving force, promising to transform lives one chess move at a time as The Ikorodu Chess Club launched an inspiring program called “Chess to Street” on the 7th of May, 2024, which was aimed at introducing the game of chess to underprivileged children in the suburbs. This remarkable initiative seeks to empower these young individuals with essential life skills and values, providing them with opportunities for personal growth and development.

The event commenced with a heartfelt opening prayer at 5pm, led by two street children, Ransom and Qudus, setting the tone for a memorable evening. Members of the Ikorodu Chess Club warmly introduced themselves to the children, explaining the purpose and objectives of the initiative. Coach Alexander emphasized the benefits of chess, highlighting its capacity to enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills among participants.

The arrival of esteemed ambassadors from the Gift of Chess, Mr. Emmanuel Adeleke and Mr. Steven Kanu, added excitement to the event. They shared personal experiences with the young participants, inspiring them to embrace the game. The Ikorodu Chess Club team conducted an interactive session, demonstrating the fundamental rules and strategies of chess to the eager children.

The former youth ambassador of Ikorodu, Mr Jackson Ayika, graced the occasion, acknowledging his invaluable support for the project. Faruq Mojeed-Sanni, the visionary behind the Ikorodu Chess Club, passionately reaffirmed his commitment and dedication to empowering underprivileged youth through transformative initiatives such as “Chess to Street.”

The event’s success was made possible through the generous support of various brands and individuals, including The Gift of Chess and others. This collective effort and community spirit drive the “Chess to Street” project, which aims to make a positive impact on the lives of underprivileged children in Ikorodu.
