Abu Dhabi Secures Bid to Host the 47th Chess Olympiad in 2028: Agreement Signed with FIDE

    Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, has secured the prestigious honour of hosting the 47th Chess Olympiad in 2028, winning the bid with an impressive 96 votes in a FIDE Council meeting. This decision, announced in December 2023, places the capital of the United Arab Emirates at the forefront of global chess events.

    The Olympiad which is scheduled from October 28 to November 11, 2028, will unfold at the esteemed Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, boasting a vast 154,678 m2 area, making it the largest venue in the Middle East. With a proposed budget of 15,300,000 Euros, the event promises to be grand and meticulously organized. Additionally, a budget of 1,250,000 Euros has been allocated for the Olympiad for People with Disabilities, highlighting inclusivity.

    The UAE’s successful bid highlights its growing stature as a global hub for international sports and major events, underlining the Olympiad’s significance in advancing chess across the region. The country’s rich chess culture, featuring players, clubs, and renowned coaches, has already made significant contributions to the global chess scene. along with hosting prominent events like The President’s Cup, the Dubai Open, the Sharjah Women’s Cup, and the Abu Dhabi Open, along with The President’s Cup, the Dubai Open, the Sharjah Women’s Cup, and the Abu Dhabi Open further highlight the UAE’s commitment to chess development.

    FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed confidence in the UAE’s ability to deliver a memorable and successful Olympiad, citing the country’s favorable location, organizational experience, and previous hosting track record. This upcoming event marks the second time the Emirates will host a Chess Olympiad, with the first being the well-regarded 27th Chess Olympiad in 1986 held in Dubai, hailed as one of the best-organized in chess history.
