The final round of the 2021 African Individual Chess Championships started at 11:00am in Lilongwe. Egyptian Chess Players dominated the 2021 African Individual Chess Championships. The last championship was held in 2019 before the pandemic. Defending champion—GM Adly Ahmed is the 2021 African Continental Chess Champion. He finished with same point 8/9 with fellow countryman—GM Amin Bassem. Egyptian Chess players—GM Fawzy Adham and GM Hesham Abdelrahman finished in third and fourth places respectively.

WIM February Jesse Nikki is African Champion.

South African’s WIM February Jesse Nikki is the winner of the women section at the African Individual Chess Championships. February clinched the championship with half point ahead of other contenders. This also earns her the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title till she fulfils FIDE title requirements, by attaining 2100 Elo.

Algeria’s WIM Nassr Lina with the better tiebreaker finished second and Egyptian’s WIM Moaataz Ayah finished third.

The Closing Ceremony

The Closing Ceremony of the 2021 African Individual Chess Championships took place on Thursday 27th May, 2021 at Golden Peacock Hotel, Lilongwe, Malawi.

In attendance are Malawi’s Minister of Youth and Sports—Ulemu Msungama, Malawi’s Minister of Lands, Housing and urban Development—Kezzie Msukwa, President, African Chess Confederation—Lewis Ncube, President, Chess Association of Malawi—Susan Namangale and many more dignitaries.
