The 2019 Junior Girls Championship which ended on Saturday, the 20th of July 2019 features top young female players from 19 to as young as nine years old, which ended with Carissa Yip being the winner.
It rated the favourite and defending champion Carissa Yip impressed with a 7½ score, but such astounding performance did not mean she had it easy, as she was on the worse side of a draw in her final round encounter against Emily Nguyen and second-placed Rochelle Wu got a win with Black to finish just a half-point behind. Ruiyang Yan got third place on 6 out of 9.
Yu is currently ranked 1st in the world in the female 16 and under the active player category. She was well on her way to chess stardom after earning a gold medal at the 2014 World Youth Chess Championship in South Africa, the only U.S. gold in the event and the first world title for an American girl since 1987. She placed 6th at the 2017 U.S. Women’s Chess Championship, 12th in 2015 and 8th in 2016. Yu holds a FIDE rating of 2285 and has participated in three World Youth Chess Championships.
