The National Sports Festival Returns to the Southwest: A Historic Chess Highlight in Ogun 2025

Nigeria’s flagship multi-sport event is making a grand return to the Southwest! For the first time since 2012, the National Sports Festival (NSF) is being hosted in the region—this time by Ogun State—from May 16 to May 31, 2025, at the M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta.

Back in 2012, Lagos State proudly hosted the NSF. That edition marked a pivotal shift in the standard and quality of the festival. Some say it was the moment chess truly began gaining national attention, as states started recruiting players and offering them competitive wages. While that may still be open to debate, one thing is clear: the 2025 edition of the National Sports Festival is already elevating not just chess, but the entire landscape of Nigerian sports.

This year’s festival is bringing more than just competition—it’s stirring national pride. In a unique and exciting development, Tunde Onakoya, renowned for his global chess activism and current Guinness World Record holder for the longest chess marathon, is playing a key role in the event. The inspirational Nigerian flag bearer is partnering with the Ogun State Sports Commission and the Nigeria Chess Federation to deliver what many are calling the most celebrated chess event in NSF history.

We had the privilege of speaking with the Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF), who shared updates and insights on how this year’s event is shaping up.

Exclusive Phone Interview with the NCF Vice President

The Vice President shared several key updates that reflect the federation’s active commitment to excellence:

1. The Event Is Being Officially Rated
Despite challenges with players lacking FIDE IDs, the NCF is ensuring the 2025 NSF chess tournament is officially rated. Internal systems are currently being used to standardize performance assessments and support player development.

2. Equipment Standards Are Fully Professional
The federation is supplying complete, high-quality chess equipment throughout the event. Tournament-grade boards, clocks, and scoresheets are in use across all boards.

3. Venue Quality Has Been Prioritized
When asked about venue preparation, the VP responded confidently:
“Yes, we’ve ensured the chess event hall is both well-lit and air-conditioned, meeting all required standards. It’s located within the Remo Stadium complex, providing a comfortable and conducive environment for top-level play.”

What’s New? Comparing 2012 to 2025

Here are some standout developments taking place at the 2025 NSF chess event:

  • Higher Average Player Ratings: More participants are competing with stronger rankings, thanks to increased access to FIDE-rated events and organized training.
  • Youth Inclusion: Young talents are stepping into the national spotlight. For instance, the composition of the Bayelsa Women’s team highlights the rise of junior professional chess.
  • Digital Enhancements: Up to 16 games are being broadcast live via DGT Live Boards, offering fans real-time access to the action.
  • Upgraded Venue Standards: The Remo Stadium setup meets professional standards, with proper lighting and climate control enhancing the player experience.

As Ogun State hosts athletes and chess enthusiasts from across Nigeria, the 2025 National Sports Festival is proving to be more than just a return—it’s a celebration of progress, pride, and the promising future of Nigerian chess.
