The 20th National Sports festival’s ground has been busy with activities of different sports, the opening ceremony will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, 6th April, 2021. Two State teams—Taraba and Oyo were flagged for defaulting COVID-19 protocols but were later readmitted.
Some sports such as Swimming, Boxing, Badminton, Abula and Cycling started on Saturday, 4th of April 2021. On Sunday 5th April, 2021, the defending champion—Delta State picked up the first place on medal table.
The stadium is busy, the tracks are tidily ready but we don’t see the chess boards yet, surely chess players are battle ready. As we learned, the chess event will kick off with technical meeting in the morning of Wednesday 7th April, 2021, followed by Round 1 in the afternoon.
The chess event will take place in Banquet Hall— University of Benin, Ugbowo Lagos Rd, Benin City, Nigeria. You can be rest assured that BruvsChess Media will be there all through the event to give you the daily reports and lowdown.
Last week The Nigeria Chess Federation President—Mr. Lekan Adeyemi mentioned during National Chess Championship 2021 unveiling of Logo that the National Sports Festival Chess event will be FIDE rated. If rated, the chess event would be considered Nigerian Chess Olympiad for states.
The Edo 2020 ongoing in 2021 will be making history not only as the first National Sports Festival Chess Event to be FIDE rated but also the first festival to have games transmitted live! Yes, that’s right, earlier last week, BruvsChess Media correspondent on field—Fasinu Tolulope met with the Initiator of the Go for a West-African Grandmaster—Mr. Austin Apemiye who informed us that he is in negotiation with the organizing committee on the use of DGT electronic chess boards he provided. Mr. Austin Apemiye said the discussions are not going smoothly so far as the committee are still yet to fully see the importance of the live transmission with special DGT Electronic chess boards.
Well, we do hope that the games are transmitted live for the sake of followers and fans of chess nationwide. More updates to come as we have them.
