FM Abimbola, WFM Perpetual and David Emerem shine at Garden City of Port Harcourt
The 12th day of the 12th month of 2020 was a sunny day and indeed a good day to play Chess as 36 Chess Lovers stormed Silverblaze Hotels and Bar, the home ground of Creekside Chess Club (CSCC) to do battle on the 64squares of the Chessboard.
Some of the finest Chess Players in the Country were in attendance such as FM Abimbola Osunfuyi rated 2292, WFM Perpetual Ogbiyoyo rated 1733, Obubele Koko 2175, Victor Onyemuwa 2043(November Champion), Okpongete Edidiong 1957 and many others.
Round one started at exactly 9am with 6 Female players, several Masters and Veterans of the game.
Round one saw Matthew Akhagbeme (Gogongo) upset one of the Favourites to win the competition Emmanuel Nwala (2001 fide) popularly known as “Man from Spain” with a spectacular Win.
At the end of 7 round of the tournament, they say truly “ratings never lie” as FM Abimbola Osunfuyi popularly known as Young GM came out tops with 6/7 points to clinch the 1st Position
While Chikezie Damasus aka Imo state number one and Dr Donald Onyekwere both from Imo state tied for the 2nd Position with 5½/7 points.
David Emerem and WFM Perpetual Ogbiyoyo share joint 1st position in the Opens Category with 5/7 points each.
Emmanuella Trust Won the Female Category while Gold Bamson took the 2nd place.
There was also a blitz event Sponsored by Naval Capt Musa Abdullahi Rtd and was won by Dr Donald Onyekwere aka SmallDoc.
